Wednesday Nights – CLASSES

FAQs

What are Wednesday Night classes?
Conveniently timed to be a mid-week check-in with your church family, these classes put practical next steps to explore your faith. On Sundays, you’re able to attend, worship and join in community—this mid-week opportunity is an extension of putting practice to Biblical truths.

Are the classes the same every semester?
Because of diversity of staff and church members, UC is able to offer many classes that change each semester. In addition to content changing, style of classes can range from video studies to interactive classes, from asking questions to exploring Biblical authors.

Who can participate in Wednesday Night classes?
Simply: everyone. To expand: our desire is to provide spaces for anyone and everyone to find community centered and surrounded by Jesus. These classes are open for anyone willing and wanting to explore faith—from those beginning the journey, to those who continue to develop their relationship with Jesus.

Can I invite a friend or co-worker?
Absolutely! As we always encourage you to grow in community, invitation into that community is vital. What would it look like to invite a friend or co-worker into your faith? Wednesday Night classes are a great way to explore topics of faith and encourage anyone to ask questions!

The Epic of Eden: Isaiah
Led by Pastor Chris Akers and Pastor Jamie Westlake
10 weeks

COST: $20 (includes book)

Often named the fifth gospel, the book of the prophet Isaiah has more to say about Israel’s coming Messiah than any other Old Testament book. Brilliant, courageous, uncompromising, this prophet declared that the year of the LORD had come and God’s people needed to either step up, or stand down. Indeed, when Isaiah spoke, kings trembled.

But too often, when Isaiah speaks today, God’s people have trouble hearing. Why? We often miss the larger context. In The Epic of Eden: Isaiah, Dr. Sandra Richter takes participants back to the eighth century BCE. This ten-week study explains Israel’s religion and economy, explores the definition and role of the prophets, and helps us to apply the message of this great champion of the faith to our lives today.

In this study, you’ll:

  • Gain a rich understanding of the context in which the book of Isaiah was written
  • Gain important context on Israel’s religion and economy and explore the definition and role of the prophets
  • Discover how the prophet Isaiah is still speaking to us today

It may be hard for you to feel optimistic about the future right now. If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, you’ve probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. This can be a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you’ve never faced before.

“Going to GriefShare feels like having warm arms wrapped around you when you’re shivering.”

This GriefShare group meets weekly to help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life. Each GriefShare session has three distinct elements:

Video seminar with experts
Each week your GriefShare group will watch a video seminar featuring top experts on grief and recovery subjects. These videos are produced in an interesting television magazine format featuring expert interviews, real-life case studies, dramatic reenactments, and on-location video.

Support group discussion with focus
After viewing the video, you and the other group members will spend time as a support group, discussing what was presented in that week’s video seminar and what is going on in your lives.

Personal study and reflection
During the week you will have the opportunity to use your workbook for further personal study of the grieving process and to help sort out your emotions through journaling. Your group will spend time discussing questions and comments from the workbook study.

What topics might be explored?

  • The Journey of Grief
  • Guilt and Anger
  • Feeling Stuck
  • What Do I Live for Now?
  • Complicating Factors
  • Heaven

Who should come?
GriefShare is for people grieving the death of a family member or friend. We understand that there are other losses in life that create feelings of grief. You might be experiencing a job loss, a divorce, estrangement from a child, or the loss of friends because of a move. This grief is real, but it is not the kind of grief discussed in GriefShare sessions.
