Book club: 6/10, 6/17, 6/24, 7/8, 7/15, 7/22, 7/29

Join us this summer for Book Club! We’re excited to come around this book, leaning into practical spiritual growth and deepening friendships through good conversation and praying for one another. We’re strongly encouraging those who come to commit to, as best as they can, read the chapter before coming. We believe this will help both the group discussion and you, individually, get out of it everything God has for you!*
*That being said, please know that if you have a week you can’t get to the reading, we don’t want that to keep you from coming!

Want a book? Since this is a book club … well, you’re going to need a book! If you’d like to purchase your own copy or go the Kindle / Audible route, you’re welcome to do so. Or, if you sign up by May 26th, you can get a discounted copy of the book ($6). (Books will be passed out at the Community night, 6/3.) Register HERE.

About the book: How to Be Unsuccessful by Pete Portal
In the midst of our anxious and exhausted culture, we’re taking up Jesus on His invitation to redefine success of His terms. This book explores true success in light of the Kingdom.

The author, Pete Portal, leads a church in Manenberg (South Africa) running ministries among the vulnerable and marginalized. He and his wife Sarah do life with young men coming out of gangsterism and drug addiction and, along with a team a friends, disciple these young men into faith, freedom, and wholeness.

Chapter overviews:

Success is… following God’s calling over good ideas.
God’s calling might look like wasting your life.

Success is… pursuing relationship over relevance.
Our desire to feel truly seen can’t be met by achieving relevance, but only deep friendship.

Success is… growing in depth rather than volume.
Being kind – even when it makes us unseen or unsuccessful – may be the greatest influence we have.

Success is… transforming over transferring.
Different ways of dealing with pain can deeply impact our lives – either transferring it to others, or taking it to God and allowing him to transform it.

Success is… being a faithful presence in the culture wars.
To follow Jesus is to be concerned with the social, economic, and political conditions in this world, and dismantling injustice is actually God’s prescription for our own flourishing.

Success is… power and participation.
Let’s explore the ideas of resurrection power and participatory suffering, how churches engage with them, and how to balance both in our lives.

Love isn’t a feeling. It’s an activity. It’s something you do. And participating in the act of love is the secret to understanding God’s love–the secret to a life well lived.

Building on the foundation of the New York Times bestseller, Love Does, the Love Does video study (DVD/digital video sold separately) is a case study in love done–a love that’s practical, functional, active. Not a “love” that has all the right answers. Not a “love” with ulterior motives. Not a “love” that’s all talk or paralyzed by doubt. But a radically alive love that’s an intentional participation in God’s world.

How is that kind of love done?

The how is what this study is about. Real growth happens when you learn how to tap into the empowering, energizing love of God. Using it fills you. Risking it secures you. Giving it satisfies you.

Each of the five sessions in the Love Does video study explores a different aspect of God’s active love through Bob Goff’s teachings and stories:

  • I’m With You – we’ve been given the invitation to love. Taking it seriously is where life meets faith.
  • Free to Fail – exploring the nature of failure, how it works, and what God does with it.
  • Audacious Love – understanding why receiving love is essential to giving love.
  • Be Not Afraid – chasing out the anxieties that keep us from acting and living the life that Jesus has called us to.
  • Follow Me – delving into how to bring our passions and plans together and bind them to God’s plan.

This study guide provides teaching notes, discussion questions, Bible study, between-session activities and a practical application called “Putting Love into Action,” which gives you the opportunity to put the principles you have learned into real-life practice.

It’s time to step off the ledge and fall into God’s immeasurable love.
